Nigel Thompson's new book "3D Graphics Programming for Win 95"
is very good. ISBN 1-57231-345-5
I agree, Thompson's book sucks.
These books also suck, don't buy them especially if you are a beginner
to DirectX or Game programming or Win32 programming:
BAD: "Windows Game SDK Developers Guide", Martyn Deobald
BAD: "Windows 95 Game Developer's Guide - Using the Game SDK",
              by Morrison and Weems.

GOOD: "DirectDraw Programming", by Brett Timmins
Ths author must be a teacher, or else he's self-taught, because it's
the clearest programming book I've ever come across. This is perfect
for a beginner, real clear, and each example/chapter builds on the
previous one.
